Part of Maggie Stern's collection of folk art socks featuring strong women, the soles of these socks include a Wells quote, "Light the Truth." and "1862-1931 fought for Equality for African American women." A hugely influential figure in American history, Wells was a journalist who documented lynchings and other crimes against African Americans in the South, who wrote and spoke out prolifically for civil and women's rights, and who went on to help found the NAACP. She was honored posthumously with a Pulitzer Prize special citation.
